International organisation the International Institute of Welding (IIW) has launched the first-ever WeldArt World Championship, placing a spotlight on the creative side of welding aimed at modernising the image of welding, inspiring talent and showing the diversity and innovation in the industry.

Welders from six world regions, namely Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Southeast Asia with China, and Australia, will first compete in regional qualifiers, says IIW CEO Dr Luca Costa.

The winners will go to the finals live at Urban Steel Expo 2027 in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Every welder around the world can take part. A welder can upload his or her WeldArt idea on an online platform and a transparent voting system will be used to determine who goes to the next round, thereby combining expert jury votes with a global online community vote.

This championship proves welding is not just industry work, but is also art. WeldArt combines technical skill with creativity. The competition brings welders and creative minds together on one platform.

Additionally, the competition is about showing what makes the industry great, namely precision, craftsmanship and passion. From precise metalwork to artistic steel sculptures, the competition is a true showcase for everyone in metal and steelwork, the organisation says.

Further, the Urban Steel Rockstars Convention is aimed at creating a global platform that shows how important welding is in today’s industry and society, says Urban Steel Rockstars initiative founder Frederic Lanz.

“The WeldArt World Championship will be a driver of new ideas, a stage for talent and a global meeting point for the welding world,” he says.
